5G “New Radio”

5G NR is a new radio access technology, developed for fifth generation mobile communication.  It is designed to be the global standard for the air interface of 5G networks.  It promises bandwidth capacity greater than the current DOCSIS Cable service. (To be fair, DOCSIS performance is not stationary target. DOCSIS 4.0 promises 10Gb/s full duplex capacity).

5G will be the “Killer Catalyst” that brings IPv6 across the finish line.  It’s a virtuous symbiotic relationship:  IPv6 permits 5G to function, and 5G presses IPv6 into full deployment.

The greatest utility in the immediate future is not so much 5G for Phones, but 5G for Fixed Point Customer Presence Equipment. [CPE].  The CPE provides the customer’s residence with IPv6 based Wired and Wireless Ethernet.

5G CPE presents a compelling replacement of Cable based ISP service.  When 5G CPE deployment become widely available, many more users may choose to cut the cord, and kick the cable company to the curb.  5G will present a brutal bandwidth battle for the last mile.

5G Wireless Internet, through handheld, and CPE will massively accelerate IPv6 adoption, as 5G is freed from any obligation to support IPv4.  In the words of the author William Gibson:

 “The future is here,
it’s just not evenly distributed”.
